The Central and West African Virus Epidemiology (WAVE) Program hosted by Félix HOUPHOUËT-BOIGNY University (UFHB) of Abidjan is implemented in 10 countries in West and Central Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, Cameroon, Gabon and Democratic Republic of Congo). WAVE aims to contribute to food security through better management of viral diseases of root and tuber crops.

Within the framework of the DeSIRA initiative and through a project coordinated by CORAF/WECARD, WAVE has obtained funding from the European Commission for the implementation of activities aimed at, among others to:

(i) coordinate the interventions in the fight against pests and diseases, in particular cassava viruses in the 10 WAVE countries
(ii) support capacity building, especially human resources by training students.

WAVE intends to use part of this funding to recruit a leading socio-economist to supervise and mentor students undertaking studies in Socio-economics. The position will be on a part-time basis and mentoring and supervision will be done mainly remotely using digital tools. When necessary, trips to the WAVE program hubs will be made in order to meet the students.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
The successful candidate will have the following profile:

• Have a PhD/Doctorate in Sociology and Social Policy
• At least 10 years of experience in agricultural education and/or research and in the implementation of projects and programs in an international, multidisciplinary and intercultural environment
• Hold at least the rank of Research Fellow at CAMES or equivalent
• Demonstrate evidence of student supervision
• Have in-depth knowledge of the management of projects financed by the European Union
• Be fluent in French and English, with the ability to read, write and communicate in both languages
• Have a good command of computer tools, in this case the Microsoft Office® Suite
• Familiarity with the West and Central African working environment and previous experience with National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) is an asset
SPECIFIC TASKS
The Socio-Economics Student Supervisor will be responsible for:
i) conducting impact pathway analysis and providing technical leadership in the design of the project’s impact pathway and evaluation;
ii) advising the WAVE project team leaders on how to integrate data collection and impact evaluation strategies into the Project from the outset;
iii) guiding the doctoral students in the collection and analysis of impact evaluation data, at the level of the various WAVE hubs;
iv) providing scientific support to students in the writing of scientific articles and thesis documents.
The Socio-Economics Student Supervisor will work under the direct supervision of the WAVE Program Executive Director and in close collaboration with the WAVE Program Project Coordinator.
NATIONALITY
Applicants must be nationals of one of the countries of which the NARS is a member of CORAF.
DURATION OF THE CONTRACT
The contract will be for an initial period of 12 months, subject to good performance during the first six (6) months. It may be renewed based on satisfactory performance and availability of financial resources for the implementation of knowledge management activities.
