The National Agricultural Research and Development Institute (INIDA) was created in 1979. INIDA is the only agricultural R&D agency in Cape Verde. It is administered by the Ministry of Rural Development.
The National Agricultural Research and Development Institute (INIDA) has the mission to conduct research on crops, livestock, forestry, and natural resource management.
Research on soil erosion, water conservation, and combating desertification all feature prominently on INIDA’s research agenda. In addition to its headquarters in Praia, INIDA operates various trial fields on the islands of Santiago and Santo Antão, but much of the institute’s research infrastructure and equipment is in a dilapidated state. Despite the importance of the fisheries sector to Cape Verde’s economy, INDP—the country’s fisheries development institute—does not conduct fisheries research. The country’s higher education sector is not involved in agricultural R&D either, setting Cape Verde apart from most other African countries.
The President of INIDA, Mrs. Angela Maria P. Barreto da vega Moreno was recently elected as the Chair of CORAF for a three years mandate further strengthening the relations between the Island state and the West and Central Africa region from a research perspective.
