CORAF/WECARD and Sahel Institute (INSAH/CILSS), with the support of the Agriculture Ministry of Mali, will jointly hold the Second Statutory Meeting of the ECOWAS-UEMOA-CILSS Regional Unique Seed Committee (COASem & CRSU), in Bamako, Mali, on August 29 and 30, 2016.
The ECOWAS commission decided to entrust the management of the West Africa Seed Committee (WASC) Executive Secretariat, for a period of five (05) years to CORAF/WECARD. This will be through the organization West Africa Seed Program (Programme semencier pour l’Afrique de l’Ouest in french PSAO/WASP).
In West Africa, the seed industry faces very important challenges in the production, distribution and marketing of certified seeds. Among them are unfavorable political environments to the development of the seed industry through several constraints related to policies hampering the availability of improved seeds and generally preventing the development of the seed sector.
West Africa Seed comitee (WASC) objective is to ensure the implementation of the ECOWAS harmonised regulations which aims to create favorable conditions, necessary to ensure the regular and timely supply of seeds in quantity and in quality for 17 ECOWAS countries.
This event follows the first statutory meeting held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on August 3 and 4, 2015.
