LIVESTOCK, FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE
Livestock covers small ruminants, piggery, poultry and large ruminants. Although there are currently potential options for Fisheries, until the sub-sector is stronger, it is better for it to be supported through incorporation with the other issues relating to non-crop products and commodities. Once the sub-sector develops the possibilities of it becoming, and surviving, as a separate programme will be reviewed. This Programme aims to achieve, for West and Central Africa, sustainable improvements in the broad-based productivity, competitiveness and markets of livestock, fisheries and aquaculture through:
- Developing appropriate technologies and innovations for livestock, fisheries and aquaculture
- Identifying and supporting the development of strategic decision-making options for policy, institutions and markets developed relating to livestock, fisheries and aquaculture
- Strengthening and co-ordinating sub-regional agricultural research system relevant to livestock, fisheries and aquaculture
- Facilitating and meeting the demand for agricultural knowledge relating to livestock, fisheries and aquaculture from targeted clients.
Technical issues for this Programme identified as High Priority during the IFPRI study [ibid] and in consultation with stakeholders are summarised in Table 4. Research under this Programme will be predominantly competitively funded through networking between NARS members, with commissioned research being an option involving any specialized national, base centres (such as ITC, CIRDES, Laboratoire de Farcha), sub-regional or international centres.
